Volunteering Case Study - Graham

BWBF Volunteers

My role within the fund is as a demonstrator/ installer of BWBF’s specially adapted audio equipment. The sets have colour contrasting controls and tactile markings which help users with limited vision.

I work from home and cover most of the county of Hampshire. My role is to respond promptly to requests for BWBF sets. I visit each recipient on a pre arranged basis and will install the relevant set and undertake a demonstration so that the user is happy and comfortable with the controls.

Having retired following a long and successful career, my years in the Royal Navy as a radio operator has allowed me to use my experience and professional training to now help people living with sight loss. I really enjoy meeting different people and helping them with their sets I take my time to carefully explain each of the easy to use controls and I am frequently asked to preset the stations as well on their set.I have been made very welcome whoever I go to see, they often tell me about their sight loss and how it has impacted on their lives, family and friends.

It is really pleasing to me to know that I am making a real difference to people’s lives in bringing the world into their homes and helping to provide this valuable and much needed service.
