Volunteering Case Study - Sarah
"I am a keen volunteer and have worked for a couple of different companies in the last few years, mainly for experience in order for me to get a job. I am registered blind so find it hard to get work.
I was looking for another company to work for and looked on a volunteering web site to find companies. Here I found the British wireless for the blind fund. I had not heard of BWBF but was looking forward to starting there.
I really wanted office experience as I aspire to be a receptionist. I started helping out with a mail shot, this kept me busy for the day and allowed me to get to know the other people in the office. I then started answering the phone and directing the caller to the correct person.
Now I am currently working with fundraising and marketing doing a survey to get information about the usage of our radios.
The first phone call of the day is a bit nerve racking but once the first 10 seconds are out of the way I slip into place. I very much enjoy speaking to the recipients; I find they are all a delight to talk to.
All the staff are friendly and I have made a couple of friends too.
My experience is growing every week as my duties can vary.
To sum it up I am very much enjoying my time here at BWBF and look forward to new challenges."
