Give the gift of companionship by making a donation this Christmas
Like most couples this Christmas, John and Janet look forward to mince pies, festive carols and mulled wine by the fire. However, unlike many people, they won't be settling down in front of the television after their turkey dinner, nor will they be able to watch as their excited grandchildren open their presents.
This is because they have retinitis pigmentosa, leaving them both completely blind.
John, 72, says although he does sometimes struggle to accept he's lost his sign, he just tries to get on with life because he knows there's nothing he can do about it, but he does admit it can be hard.
"You can be really lonely at times, there's no doubt about that. It goes with sight loss. And you get bored sometimes too," he says.
However, there is support available to visually impaired people like John and Janet which helps them feel less isolated and alone.
British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) provides specially adapted radios on a free loan basis to people with sight loss and is the only charity in the UK which does this, helping to ease the feelings of loneliness and depression which can come with a visual impairment.
John and Janet have one of our Sonata Plus+ internet players and often listen to it together, usually to sport.
They tune into the live streams for cricket and have a wealth of sports news, results and league tables at their fingertips.
BWBF receives no government funding so it is only thanks to the on-going generosity of our supporters that we can continue to help blind and partially sighted people.
We would be extremely grateful if you would be able to make a donation this Christmas to help us give the gift of companionship to more people like John and Janet.
Please consider Gift Aiding your donation. Gift Aid is a valuable source of additional income for us at no extra cost to you. For every £10 donated by a UK Taxpayer who has completed a Gift Aid declaration, the charity can claim an extra £2.50 from the government.
