Give the gift of companionship this Christmas by making a donation
“My family and I are so grateful to those who support BWBF. Your kindness gives us so much more than just a radio.”
The lead up to Christmas day can be filled with excitement and anticipation. More so with children and grandchildren in the house eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus and presents! All over the UK family bedtime stories are read to excited children in the hope they will drift off to sleep and not wake up too early on the big day.
It will be no different in the McDonald’s home in Bristol this year – except the bedtime stories won’t be read from a book. This is because Theresa McDonald and other family members suffer from hereditary congenital cataracts and nystagmus meaning that they experience degrees of blindness, making reading almost impossible.
However, since we sent Grandmother Theresa a new Concerto 2, which also plays audio content from tapes, CDs and USB sticks, she has been able to receive audio books in the post.
She said “When my grandchildren visit now they don’t have to go without a bedtime story and I can sit and listen with them and have a cuddle”.
Four generations of the family have received adapted radios on free loan from British Wireless and Theresa has been supported for over twenty years.
British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) is the only charity in the UK providing adapted radios on free loan to blind and partially sighted people. To this day BWBF remains committed to improving our adapted radios and keeping up to date with the changing needs of the blind community.
Years ago Theresa’s dad would have received a very basic set with just two big dials, however her grandchildren now have one of our new touchscreen Bumblebee tablets which gives them access to unlimited radio stations, thousands of books and some live websites all presented in spoken format. Developing new app technology such as Bumblebee is only possible thanks to your generosity.
Each year British Wireless supports over 3000 families like the McDonald’s. We need your help to ensure we are around to support generations to come.
